INTRODUCTION TO CONTEMPORARY ART
The Culture of Art
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course will introduce the participants to the culture of contemporary art, following a route which starts from the general context of XIX and XX Century culture, through the setting of the contemporary system of arts and the analysis of few imaginative landscapes of production. After the two mentioned fundamental steps of contextualization (general intellectual and cultural context; system of different arts such as visual art, music, movie, literature), the study of contemporary art will proceed along the story of a sequence of experiences, in which Italian and Milanese landscapes are active subjects. Students will be led in a complex and fascinating story in which artistic phenomena are told as human, formal and social occurrences. The reality of Milano in the last twelve decades will be considered the court on which the flow of various artistic trends can be observed.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The aim of the course is to help students to construct a critical vision of the artistic phenomena and a structured perception of contemporary art as a rich and complex reality. The course aims to show a cultural perspective in the reading of art, emancipating from the bad habit of undergo contemporary art as a system of sterile icons.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Participants should have a basic knowledge of the main historical phases of modernity (do not to confuse pre-war for post-war), willingness to read a cultural phenomenon and to study an essay considering it as an intellectual tool.
OUTPUT
Students will produce, at the end of the course, a paper, an essay on a subject regarding contemporary art. They will be able to discuss their work and take part in a conversation on an artistic subject with competence.
