HOW TO ENROL
FASHION TEXTILE AND FIBRES: CONVERSATIONS WITH CLOTH
Attraversing a Sea of Textiles from Europe to AsiaCOURSE DESCRIPTION
The head professor Nancy Martin was a student of Josef and Anni Albers and thus followed their footsteps in her process of research and exploration. The profound influence of Bauhaus philosophy can still be traced in her professional path. The course takes us to some of the key areas of global textile production.
The course includes both traditional and contemporary textiles, and outlines their use. The role of textiles is considered in relation to the person and the environment, and includes the social value of the textile itself.
During the voyage we observe the varying functions of textile adornment from place to place. The textile designer and his position in the structure, both artisanal and industrial is also under observation.
During the course the student meets with textile experts from various backgrounds, including designers, collectors and producers.
The students are encouraged to bring to the course textiles that they would like to examine in detail.
The use of cloth can be found in many different situations, which vary from the museum to the Emergency Room, and the students can explore its many different dimensions – from the microscopic world of fibers to large-scale artworks using textiles.
During the afternoon sessions the students work on an original idea concerning textiles. The course proposes an overview of the vast reach of textiles, and the language necessary to describe them.
The “hands on” approach allows the student to learn by doing more than listening. The course proposes an unusual opportunity to study, touch and acquaint himself directly with materials that have, each one, a distinct personality.
He learns to assess not only the economic value of cloth, but its physiological, functional, social and symbolic values as well.
The open structure of the course allows the participants to acquire specific knowledge of the textile field. It proposes as well to adapt this knowledge to the personal needs of each student to refine and re-define his choices in textiles.
