CONTEMPORARY ART AND CURATORIAL STUDIES STUDIO

The Form of Artistic Expression

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course will lead the participants into the system of art meant as a formal structure historically determined. Starting with an introduction to the cultural relativism as a method and not as anarchic driftage, the course will present the system of art in its relationship and in its autonomy with respect to the other cultural and intellectual phenomena. This means that the course will pass through an analysis of the structure of the biggest revolutions of the contemporaneity, then through an analysis of the requirements for a structure of representation formally defined, and then through a series of cases in which the two theoretical parts will be reified. As a further case of formal organization of an artistic representation, the course will propose to students an analysis of the techniques for defining a project for an exhibition, meant as a chance of meeting between artists involved in the different fields, the public, students, scholars.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course has the objective to make students able to conceive an artistic project, in both the role of hypothetical authors and of curators. The project should be based on the ability to merge intellectual interests, curiosity toward a design challenge, dedication for the sense of formal aspects.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Participants should have knowledge with the history of contemporary art and culture and a vivid interest for arts meant as public and usable phenomena (shows, concerts, performances, exhibitions, live events).

OUTPUT

Students will produce, at the end of the course, an artistic project on a theme which will be intended as an intellectual and artistic challenge.
